"Act as a literary agent"

Am intrigued. To who?

Hello Sinead,

That in itself is a long story and a post in itself, so here we go. Last Christmas a friend of mine who lives in Prague was in Dublin for a few days. He’s a musician and one of the guys he plays with in Prague is a poet with two collections of poetry. I’ve published a few of his poems here, his name’s Lucien Zell.

Anyway my friend came over with a few copies of Lucien’s book with a view to getting bookshops to stock them. All very haphazard and by the seat of your pants. So after Christmas we visited a few bookshops around the city to enquire would they be interested in the book, which by the way is entitled “Eden’s Midnight Playground”. No’s and not interested greeted us at every corner. But I continued undaunted. I knew Anthology Books in Meeting House Square might be interested.

So there we went New Years Eve 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Did they take the book? Well indeed they did. Only to delighted. I didn’t really have to try too hard then. They treated us like kings heralding the dawn of a new era.

The last time I enquired there was great interest in the book and interest in Lucien coming to Dublin to do a reading. Thus far nothing on that front though.

So perhaps “agent” is not the correct term. “Representative or Promoter” would be more exact appellations. And for my efforts what did I get? Nada. Nothing. Not a red cent. But that’s not the point.

The point is that the book got accepted, generated a positive response and sold.

And that is how I became literary agent.

ps

Lucien plays in a band called “The Wavemen” and included in the collection of poems is their first CD. The whole package costs €10. The music is very REM, the poems fantastic!

Might have something again in the near future, but I'll have to wait and see.

Seoman,
I've already done the seven thing and I named you to do it! I don't think there is anyone left who hasn't done it at this stage...

“The Search for the Panchen Lama” by Isabel Hilton
I wasn't aware of this book, not sure how I missed it as I've read loads on Tibet.

Julius “The Search for the Panchen Lama” is a very insightful book into the tragedy of Tibet. You sould track it down.

Managing a football team is going to be difficult though isn't it?

Oh I don't know UI, always had success picking the team in school and out on the street.

I promise I'll take this meme up Seoman, but not for another week or two (when I get back from holidays).

Must look out for Lucien's book though, sounds interesting.

"The Search for the Panchen Lama"

Is that a third book by Isabel Hilton. I've read one she did about Tibet and activism. But I can't remember what it's called. It was fairly good, but I didn;t really like her writing style.

Kevin,
That book - For Tibet with Love - was by Isabel Losada, different person. I thought it was pretty good too but a bit 'girlie'!

Yeah, I went up and checked the shelf. A bit girlie indeed. Also, people shouldn't be allowed have the same first names - it just makes a fool out of me!
